The plastic parting line refers to the boundary between the movable template and the fixed template of the injection mold when the mold is closed. It will leave a thin line on the molded product. The design and location of the injection mold parting line have an important impact on the appearance, function and quality of the product.
The following is Universe Plastic Engineer’s experience sharing on plastic parting lines, including its design principles, influencing factors, common problems and solutions.

Parting line design principles
1. Minimize visual impact
Try to design the parting line in an inconspicuous or hidden place to reduce the impact on the appearance of the product.
2. Reduce processing difficulty
Simplify mold manufacturing and assembly by choosing locations that are easy to machine.
3. Ensure functionality
Ensure that the parting line does not affect the function of the product, such as sealing, strength, etc.
4. Easy to demould
The position of the parting line should be conducive to the smooth release of the product from the mold to avoid mold sticking and damage.
5. Evenly distribute stress
Choose a location that can evenly distribute internal stress to reduce warpage and deformation of the product.
Common parting line design locations
1. Edge position
The parting line is designed on the edge of the product, which is usually inconspicuous and easy to process.
2. Corner position
Designing parting lines at corners can hide the parting lines using natural shape transitions.
3. Plane position
Designing parting lines on a larger plane is suitable for products with simple shapes, but you need to pay attention to the flatness.
4. Functional area
Design parting lines in areas that do not affect the function of the product, such as edges or internal structures that do not affect sealing.
Factors affecting parting line design
1. Complex geometries may require multiple parting surfaces to achieve complete molding.
2. The movable mold, fixed mold, slider, inclined roof and other structures of the mold will affect the position of the parting line.
3. Consider the demoulding direction of the product and ensure that the position of the parting line is conducive to the smooth demoulding of the product.
4. Process parameters such as injection pressure, speed and cooling time will also affect the position and quality of the parting line.
5. The fluidity and shrinkage rate of different materials will affect the design and performance of the parting line.

Common parting line problems and solutions
1. Parting line misalignment
Reason: The mold clamping is inaccurate or the mold clamping force is insufficient.
Solution: Adjust the mold alignment to ensure accurate matching of the movable mold and the fixed mold, and increase the clamping force.
Reason: The mold is not closed tightly or the injection pressure is too high.
Solution: Check the mold closing condition, ensure that the mold is closed tightly, and reduce the injection pressure.
3. The parting line is rough
Reason: Poor surface treatment of the mold or poor material flow.
Solution: Polish the mold parting surface and choose plastic materials with good fluidity.
4. The parting line is obvious
Reason: Improper selection of parting line location or mold wear.
Solution: Re-evaluate and adjust the position of the parting line, maintain and replace the mold regularly.
Summarize
The design of plastic parting line is a key link in the design of injection molds. It requires comprehensive consideration of various factors such as the appearance, function, mold structure and production process of the product. By rationally designing the position of the parting line, the quality of the product can be improved, problems in production can be reduced, and production efficiency can be improved.
