What is plastic thermoforming
Plastic thermoforming is a plastic manufacturing process in which a thermoplastic sheet is heated to a flexible molding temperature, then shaped into a specific shape in a mold, and finally cooled and trimmed to create a usable product.
For example, a sheet cut into a certain size and shape is clamped to the frame of the mold, and is heated to the molding temperature of the thermoplastic sheet. The sheet stretches while being heated, and then the pressure is applied to make it fit tightly. The mold surface is used to obtain a pattern similar to the mold surface. After cooling, shaping and trimming, the product is obtained.

Plastic thermoforming process
The thermoforming process can be broken down into two basic steps, one is heating and the other is shaping.
heating: The heating equipment consists of radiant heaters, plastic plates are the raw material used and are fixed on top of the mold cavity with the help of clamps. For deformation purposes, only vacuum or vacuum with air pressure is used to create force. Regardless of the process used, holes are drilled into the bottom of the mold. The plastic plate is held in place by clamps as the radiant heater applies heat to the surface.
forming: When the sheet is soft enough, it is pulled into the mold by vacuum pressure. Due to the pressure, the sheet takes the shape of the mold and is removed after curing.

Applications of Plastic Thermoforming
There are many different products/processes that use thermoforming such as: open plastic panels and containers, food containers and packaging, plastic signs , household appliances such as sinks, tub and shower panels, automotive plastic parts. Especially plastic interiors, boat hulls, shaped skylights, electrical enclosures, Braille text pages, electrical cabinets, etc.
Materials used in plastic thermoforming
Plastics used for thermoforming mainly include polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride, polyolefins (such as polyethylene, polypropylene), polyacrylates (such as polymethylmethacrylate) and cellulose (such as nitrocellulose, Cellulose acetate, etc.) plastics, also used in engineering plastics (such as ABS resin, polycarbonate)
Plastic Thermoforming and Injection Molding

Choosing Thermoforming or Injection Molding
The choice between thermoforming and injection molding needs to be evaluated based on the specific needs of the product and the characteristics of the manufacturing process. For example, injection molding is often a better choice for small, complex parts and larger production runs.
However, if the plastic parts are relatively large in size and the shape design is simple, thermoforming is a better choice in a short production cycle.
