What is Injection Molding Thermal Decomposition
During injection molding, plastic materials will cause structural decomposition under high temperature and high pressure. This phenomenon is called thermal decomposition.
Impact
1. Thermal decomposition of injection molding will reduce the quality of the final plastic parts, such as rough surface, different colors, different sizes, etc.
2. The gases and harmful substances produced by thermal decomposition will pollute the air environment in the production area and cause harm to the health of injection molding personnel.
3. Thermal decomposition will damage the heating system, molds and other key components of injection molding equipment, increasing equipment maintenance costs and downtime.
Causes
High temperature and high pressure are the most basic conditions for injection molding production, but the thermal stability of injection molded plastic materials is limited. Excessive temperature or pressure will cause thermal decomposition of some plastic materials. Prolonged high temperatures and high pressures will also accelerate the aging and decomposition process of plastic materials.
Plastic materials that are prone to thermal decomposition
Polycarbonate: PC has excellent strength and heat resistance, but it is easy to decompose in high temperature environments, especially when exposed to high temperatures for a long time, thermal decomposition may occur.
Polyimide: PI is a high-performance engineering plastic with excellent temperature resistance and mechanical properties, but it may also undergo thermal decomposition at extremely high temperatures.
Polyetheretherketone: PEEK has excellent heat resistance, chemical stability and mechanical properties, but thermal degradation may occur under high temperature conditions, and the degradation products may affect the performance of the finished product.
PTFE: PTFE is a special plastic with excellent high temperature resistance and low friction coefficient, but it may thermally decompose at extremely high temperatures and produce harmful gases.
Polyphenylene ether sulfide: PBT has good heat resistance and electrical properties, but thermal decomposition may also occur under extreme high temperatures, affecting the performance of the finished product.
How to prevent and control
1. Control the injection molding temperature and pressure: Ensure that the temperature and pressure during the injection molding process are within the tolerance range of the plastic material, and avoid excessive temperatures and pressures.
2. Choose appropriate plastic materials: Choose plastic materials with good thermal stability according to product requirements and injection molding conditions.
3. Optimize mold design: Reasonably design the mold structure and channel system to ensure that the plastic material is heated and cooled evenly during the filling and cooling process.
4. Regularly inspect equipment: Regularly inspect and maintain the heating system, cooling system and other key components of injection molding equipment to discover and eliminate potential problems in a timely manner.
